How Often Should You Have Your Teeth Scaled? Everything You Need to Know
Tartar can build up even if you brush regularly. Why it forms, how often to get a professional clean, and the myths around it.
Even with daily brushing, hard yellowish deposits can form on your teeth and along the gum line. This is tartar, and it cannot be removed with a toothbrush.
This article is for general information; consult a dentist for advice specific to you.
How does tartar form?
Bacteria and food remnants form a sticky film called plaque. If not removed, minerals in saliva harden it into tartar, which only a dentist can remove. Poor brushing, skipping floss, smoking, sugary or acidic drinks and crowded teeth speed it up.
Why remove it?
Tartar's rough surface attracts more plaque and can inflame the gums. Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. Tartar is also a common cause of bad breath. Bleeding or swollen gums are a sign to see your dentist.
How often?
Most healthy adults are advised to have a check-up once or twice a year, with cleaning as needed. Smokers, people who build tartar quickly, those with a history of gum disease or orthodontic patients may need more frequent visits. Your dentist decides the right interval.
How is it done?
An ultrasonic scaler loosens tartar with vibration and water spray, followed by hand instruments and polishing. It usually takes 30–60 minutes in a single session.
Myths
- "It wears down enamel." Properly performed cleaning does not damage enamel.
- "Sensitivity is permanent." Temporary sensitivity for a few days is common.
- "It hurts." Most people feel mild discomfort; local anaesthetic is an option.
- "It whitens teeth." It removes stains but does not change natural colour.
Prevention at home
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss or use interdental brushes daily.
- Replace your toothbrush every three months.
- Limit sugary snacks and acidic drinks; quit smoking.
